Rio Tinto executives lose millions in bonuses over destruction of Juukan Gorge

Rio Tinto CEO, Jean-Sebasiten Jacques, has lost nearly $5 million in bonuses, and the head of its Australian ore group will lose more than $1 million in bonuses after an internal review found the company had “systematic failures in the cultural heritage management system.” This comes after the destruction of a 46,000 Aboriginal heritage site at Juukan Gorge. Likewise The internal report released by Rio Tinto found its failures were “symptomatic of a work culture that was more focused on ensuring that necessary approvals and consents were in place for ground disturbance of culturally significant sites, rather than also managing changing cultural heritage issues.”
