Issues Management Certificate 2021

This course explores corporate issues management, international best practice, and provides practical tools for managing issues facing organisations.

Overview

How an organisation manages issues has a very important impact on its reputation among its key stakeholders. This online learning certificate course is delivered over eight weeks, and includes seven lectures, readings, four live webinars, and case study work in syndicates of participants over three meetings via an online learning platform.

The certificate course has been developed for practitioners involved in issues management in their organisations, or participants who want to strengthen markedly their issues management capability, and receive a formal certificate of attainment to attest to their completing the course.

The course explores corporate issues management, international best practice, and provides practical tools for managing the issues facing your organisation.

The certificate course includes: an examination of the issues management process and its objectives; formal and informal issues management models; the issues life cycle, including identification of issues; issues framing (naming, blaming, claiming); arena choice and agenda setting; advanced issues management practice; and measurement and reporting.

As a course participant you will examine also practical examples of issues management plans, how to form issues management teams and assign responsibilities and accountabilities, cooperation with line managers and other management functions in corporations, and in coalitions of entities forged to manage a significant issue.

Effective management of issues to avoid crises will be explored also.

Course Timetable

The course is conducted over eight weeks, and will commence in the week beginning 15 March and end week of 3 May 2021. It is available to practitioners internationally.

The course, which will be delivered via the Centre’s online learning platform, comprises: 

  • Seven lectures delivered in video format by Wayne Burns, Executive Director, Centre for Corporate Public Affairs. 
  • The lectures must be viewed as part of completing the tasks embedded in each week of the course. 
  • The lectures are highly instructive, and your engagement with them is tested in a quiz and short assignment, the completion of which allows participants to move into the next week of the course.
  • Five of the lectures are accompanied by readings that need to be read to progress to the next stage of the course.
  • Working in a syndicate group of other course participants is required across the duration of the course to work on an assigned case study. Participants will be assigned the case study and a syndicate group in Week 1. Completing the syndicate work is necessary to successfully complete the course.
  • Participation in four live webinars, the last of which will represent the end of the certificate course. The webinars will be conducted via an online video learning platform, will be facilitated by Wayne Burns from the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs, and will be highly interactive. The webinars will be recorded for participants who may not be able to attend at the time they are scheduled live.
Course Logistics

The webinars and syndicate group sessions will be scheduled before the course begins, and the Centre will work to ensure that participants across time zones are able to participate fully in live webinars and syndicate group work via our video learning platform.

At least 15 participants are required to register for the Issues Management Certificate Course for it to proceed.

The course and its sessions are held under the Chatham House Rule to promote robust and quality peer-to-peer interaction. The syndicate group work as part of the course is self-managed by participants in each of those groups. You will be assigned a case study on which to work, and you and your fellow syndicate group members will need to work through that case study, and present your group work, during the course’s final webinar (Week 8). Participants from Member companies of the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs can register and pay the course fees online, via the Centre’s website.

Participants who are self-funded, or from non-Member entities, can register and be forwarded a tax invoice to remit payment online.

Refunds for withdrawal of registration will be available only up to 14 days before the commencement of the course.

All course modules need to be completed for a participant to be awarded a Certificate in Issues Management from the Centre for Corporate Public Affairs.
