The Centre is unique in offering this professional development module specifically designed for Executive Assistants and Team Coordinators working in corporate public affairs.

Completion of this two-day module strengthens participants' understanding of the latest developments in the function, supports them to adapt to the way the function works, and provides these important team members with insights to best practice corporate public affairs function modus operandi.

This includes how they fit into best practice, can be part of effective issues management and reputation stewardship, and how they can apply innovation to effective team performance are elements also of the curriculum also.

Led by the Centre’s Executive Director Wayne Burns and delivered also by Guest Faculty Jane Anderson, Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs - Insurance Australia Group,  Sally Mackenzie, Government Relations Principal – Telstra, and Elizabeth Rex, General Manager Stakeholder Engagement - Stockland, the module will support EAs and Team Coordinators engage with:

  • The corporate public affairs management function and where it is headed.  Evolution of the function internationally, and structure of the function in Australia
  • How the EA and Team Coordinator role fits into the contemporary corporate public affairs function. The role of the management facilitation role in the corporate public affairs team
  • The role of the 24/7 Head of Function and team - anatomy of high performing corporate public affairs teams
  • Corporate reputation and social licence to operate. What stakeholders expect/demand from corporate entities in the digital economy
  • Harnessing and managing public affairs super trends - the next big things in the function
  • Corporate public affairs case study/syndicate group session.

Guest Faculty

Jane Anderson, Executive General Manager, Corporate Affairs - Insurance Australia Group

Jane joined IAG in March 2014 and has more than 25 years' corporate affairs experience in financial services including insurance, banking, superannuation and asset management.

At IAG, Jane leads the Group Corporate Affairs team managing IAG’s reputation and communication across the Group. This includes responsibility for shareholder communications, employee communications, government and industry affairs, and media relations.

Jane was previously Director of Media and Community Relations at AMP managing the company’s Australian and international profile and reputation. She was also responsible for AMP’s corporate social media activity and managing their community engagement program through the AMP Foundation. Prior to this, Jane held senior corporate affairs roles with AMP and Westpac in New Zealand.

Jane has also served as a member of the New Zealand Advertising Standards Complaints Board and as a director of a large employee superannuation scheme.

Sally Mackenzie, Government Relations Principal, Telstra

Sally is a highly-networked and accomplished corporate affairs strategist who has worked in highly regulated sectors in Australia and across the Asia Pacific, in the public and private sectors. A former diplomat, she has a solid track record working with a broad range of stakeholders in complex regulatory environments including banking and finance, energy and telecommunications.

She is sought after for her excellent communications, government relations and public policy skills and is known as a collaborative problem solver and passionate advocate for big causes. An experienced and well-respected not-for-profit board member and deputy chair, she sits on the boards of the Domestic Violence Crisis Service and the Australian Professional Government Relations Association.

Elizabeth Rex, General Manager Stakeholder Engagement, Stockland

Elizabeth is the General Manager Stakeholder Engagement, Stockland. Until December 2021 Elizabeth was Head of Communications at AGL where she led media, corporate communications, campaigns and digital channels as part of the Corporate Affairs team.

Elizabeth’s expertise is across the full scope of Corporate Affairs, including media, issues management, government and community relations, sustainability, and employee communications in ASX-listed and global corporations.

Beginning in Financial Services, her experience has been gained in a variety of industries, including Telecommunications, Pharmaceuticals, Mining, Oil & Gas and Energy.

Elizabeth is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the only female board member of Manly United Football Club; she is also a Member of the Australian Centre for Corporate Public Affairs.
